WANT TO ASSIST WITH MULLOWAY STOCKING RESEARCH

This research is funded by the NSW Recreational Saltwater Fishing Trust, the University of NSW, NSW DPI Fisheries and the Australian Research Council. We wish to encourage as many anglers as possible to participate in the research, as the greater the participation the greater the benefit.

If you are a keen mulloway fisherman and wish to assist with our mulloway stocking research, please contact the team at the University of NSW (mulloway@unsw.edu.au).

There are several ways in which you can assist:

  1. If you are a catch-and-release fisherman, we can pass on a kit too you. The kit consists of 25 vials, a datasheet/clipboard/pencil, instruction leaflets, and a set of stainless steel clippers. When you land a mulloway, you record the date/location/length of capture, clip off the 1st and 2nd anal fin spines, place them in a vial and return the fish to the water. When the kit is getting full, contact the UNSW team to pick up the old one and drop off the new one.
  2. If you RETAIN your mulloway catch, we are extremely interested in getting all parts of the fish not used. This would usually entail the fisher filleting the muscle of the fish for consumption, and placing the remaining intact parts (head, frame, guts and gonads) in a bag and freezing immediately. Contact the UNSW team to arrange a convenient pick-up time and place on (02) 9385 2185, and a UNSW representative will pick up the package within 2-4 days.

There will also be mulloway fishing competitions, and mulloway fishing clinics, run by the University of NSW over the next 5 years. To book a fishing clinic for your club, please contact the UNSW team to make arrangements.

If you would like to stay informed of the progress of our mulloway stocking research, please email mulloway@unsw.edu.au and request to be added to the mailing list. Updates will be sent out bi-annually, and we will keep you informed of fishing clinics and fishing competitions.

ALL THOSE PARTICIPATING IN THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL GO INTO A DRAW TO RECEIVE A MULLOWAY STOCKING PROJECT KOKODA FISHING SHIRT.

Approximately 50 Kokoda shirts are available to be won each year. Each fish or fin-spine (provided they are accompanied by appropriate data, i.e. length, location etc) will give one entry into the draw. Entries will be reset after each bi-annual draw. The shorts will be delivered to a nominated address free of charge. The draw is only open for fish captured in NSW.
